The Relationships We Inherited
Introducing Gen XO by Kate Engler
A new book about Gen X, relationships, and the models we inherited.
For years, I’ve worked with individuals and couples who are trying to build relationships that feel equal, connected, and sustainable. Again and again, I’ve seen the same tension: we may have grown up expecting a more modern kind of partnership, but many of us are still living within relationship models that were built for a very different world.
That tension is at the heart of my new book, Gen XO. Drawing on relational psychology, sociology, history, and decades of clinical experience, I look at the forces that have shaped Generation X relationships—especially the expectations around marriage, work, parenting, emotional labor, independence, and equality.
Gen XO isn’t about blaming one partner or declaring relationships broken. It’s about recognizing the patterns we inherited, putting language to what so many people have been experiencing, and creating a more honest conversation about what partnership can look like now.
Pre-order GEN XO today before its release on October 20, 2026.
